Steven Matz Shutdown for Three Weeks

New York Mets Manager Terry Collins said today that LHP Steven Matz will be shutdown for three weeks after he experienced irritation in his left elbow during two pitching sessions on Monday and Tuesday. Matz had an MRI on his left elbow and the results came back negative. Hopefully Matz will be able to join the rotation in the next  few weeks and be able to stay healthy for the rest of the season.

Michael Conforto and Ty Kelly Make Mets Opening Day Roster

 New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson announced today that outfielder Michael Conforto and utility man Ty Kelly have made the Opening Day roster. Conforto and Kelly will help round up the Mets bench along with catcher Rene Rivera, as well infielder Wilmer Flores and infielder T.J. Rivera. Originally Conforto was expected to start the season in Triple-A, but wound up making the roster after CF Juan Lagares went on the disabled list with an oblique injury.

Zack Wheeler Makes Mets Rotation

New York Mets RHP Zack Wheeler has made the starting rotation and will start the fourth game of the season against the Florida Marlins on April 7th. Wheeler will be making his first major league start since September 25, 2014 against the Washington Nationals. He has missed the last two seasons after undergoing Tommy John Surgery. Wheeler pitched 12.1 innings in Spring Training and had seven strikeouts. In Spring training, he had an ERA of 5.46 and a WHIP of 1.46. In his last season in 2014, Wheeler had a record of 11-11 with a 3.54 ERA and 1.33 WHP in 187 innings in 185.1 innings. It is expected that Wheeler will be on an innings limit this pitch and pitch only around 125 innings.

Mets Closer Jeurys Familia Suspended for 15 games

New York Mets closer RHP Jeurys Familia has been suspended for 15 games without for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policies. Familia will be eligible to return on April 20th against the Philadelphia Phillies. He will be losing 18 days of pay that will cost him over $730,000. Familia will be making donations to charity and speak to rookies on domestic violence as part of his punishment in addition to completing 12 90 minute counseling sessions in the offseason.
